For hundreds of years quilts have been constructed, not only from the latest fashionable fabrics of the day, but from textiles already in the home, which had been outgrown or started to show signs of wear, but were too valuable to throw away.
A quilt is generally defined as 3 layers,
the quilt top which carries the design,
the wadding and the plain backing fabric.
A quilt which just has fleece backing and doesn't therefore require wadding is classed as a throw - any small quilt (less than a single bed-size)
can be backed with fleece.
I can also machine-finish uncompleted quilts, like the one above which was found in a charity shop, or repair quilts which have seen better days, though this would depend on the extent of the damage to the quilt.
